Ashtami is the highest point of celebration in the four day long celebration. It is the day Goddess Durga kills Mahishasura, the buffalo-demon. Devotees are once again awed at her courage and power. Falling at her feet they ask for her blessings. 108 lamps are lighted to commemorate the Sandhipuja – when Durga turned into the fearful Chamunda to wipe off the evil and protect the innocent.

The ritual of Raksha Bandhan is beyond religion or blood relations. The Mughal king Humayun was tied the Rakhi by Rajput queen Karnavati of Chittor.
